"I focus on how to create connections with others through my work, whether it’s evoking a memory or stirring a sense of awareness. While some choose words to express themselves, I choose images."
Chivas graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University in 2018. As a multidisciplinary creator, she launched her freelance career after graduation, initially focusing on printmaking. During the pandemic, Chivas devoted more time to comics and illustration, gradually refining her practice, which now fluidly moves between art and design. Her work is distinguished by exaggerated body movements and vibrant colours. She previously worked part-time as a project manager at Studio MARY and, since 2023, has been creating a comic series for Sunday MingPao. Chivas also works as a part-time educator at M+.
In 2021, Chivas held her first solo exhibition at the Hong Kong Open Printshop, featuring nine woodblock print illustrations. This series earned her the 2021 Award360° Illustration of the Year and secured her a place in the Illustrator’s Exhibition at the 2023 Bologna Children’s Book Fair. Her work has been exhibited in Korea, Japan and Shanghai. NIGHT NIGHT, a long-form comic published in collaboration with Studio MARY in 2022, marked Chivas’s first major comic project. It was shortlisted for the D&AD Awards 2023 in book design (Young Adult) and received a special mention in comics (Young Adult) from the BolognaRagazzi Awards.
Though art and design share common ground, they differ in essential ways. How does one navigate between the two? Zines have become Chivas’s ideal medium for exploration, blending book design with elements of artistic expression. Inspired by the bold experimentation in content and form seen in many independent overseas publishers, Chivas plans to learn from these studios abroad to further expand her creative practice.
