Tam Chi Yan, Jack
Environmental Design | Graduate of University of California, Berkeley (Architecture)

"Every time I visit a new place, I find that good architecture elicits a strong emotional response. I aspire to be a designer who fosters these emotional connections for others. I believe that design and architecture have the ability to inspire and become a meaningful part of people's lives."

Jack graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Hong Kong in 2019 and earned his Master of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2024. In his first semester at UC Berkeley, he conceived the rooftop revitalisation project ‘Agri-topia’, centred on the concept of co-farming for a neighbourhood near an agricultural market in Oakland. This project earned him the school's Design Excellence Award. In 2024, Metropolis magazine recognised Jack as one of the "2024 METROPOLIS Future100" for his wide-ranging projects across different disciplines.

Jack’s interest in new technologies began during his undergraduate years at the University of Hong Kong. His thesis, Re-inventing Ornamental Structure, reimagined traditional brick-making by using robotic arms to design and manufacture bricks in various styles. By harnessing technology, he not only achieved unique aesthetic results but also optimised cost efficiency. In 2024, he ventured into multimedia with Construction of Consciousness: Crafting Emotional Landscape through Spatial Narrative in Film, transitioning from designer to filmmaker. This project examined scene transitions through architectural spatial connections and embodied his belief in architecture’s emotional influence.

Having worked with international firms like the OMA, Jack has collaborated with colleagues and clients from diverse backgrounds, gaining insights into how multicultural perspectives enhance architectural creativity. He plans to pursue further studies at companies abroad, specialising in technological innovation, where he hopes to merge traditional craftsmanship with modern technology to create more engaging and innovative designs.
