Rest and Tattoo, Founder & Artist

“My tattoo consultations have taught me how to connect with people. My clients often share their inner thoughts and negative experiences, which unfold into an organic healing journey. Absorbing their emotional burdens can be draining, but I have gradually discovered an artistic approach, so these encounters provide valuable insights and inspire me.”

Yau became passionate about the arts in secondary school. He earned a Higher Diploma in Graphic Information Design from the Hong Kong Design Institute in 2009, and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Design from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2012, and it was then that he became interested in illustration and publishing. In 2010, he co-founded the design art collective Dirty Paper with a fellow student from the HKDI, showing their illustrations in solo and group exhibitions.

In 2018, Yau fell in love with the art of tattooing, and set up Rest and Tattoo, his own tattoo studio. A self-taught tattoo artist, he holds face-to-face consultations, and blends the arts of tattooing and graphic design giving his tattoos a unique fresh aesthetic. Yau's approach uses a critical and introspective connection with his inner self as he transforms complex stories into abstract or minimalist motifs. For Yau tattooing goes with internal self-healing and brings people together.

Instead of following the body's natural curves Yau's unconventional tattoos are straight tattoo strips adorned with graphic shapes. His "Loss of the Beloved" series explores a client’s experiences of losing loved ones. Another series titled "The Expression of Self-Identity" was a three-year project, documenting the growth and self-discovery of a client. Yau has also created a multimedia art installation titled "Begin the End" for a group exhibition. He is now planning to collaborate with tattoo studios specialising in experimental and abstract tattoos in Germany.
